Indianapolis Motor Speedway, opened in 1909 and famous as the home of the Indianapolis 500, hosted the United States Grand Prix from 2000 to 2007 on a purpose-built road course that incorporated part of the historic 2.5-mile oval — including the legendary banked Turn 1 taken in the opposite direction to the Indy 500. The 4.192 km infield layout was distinctive for blending oval banking with a slow infield section, producing the unique character that defined its eight F1 races (including the infamous 2005 six-car race).
