Nico Rosberg has described the red flag period mid-way through the Australian Grand Prix as a “poker game” after he won the opening race of the season.
Rosberg was trailing Ferrari pair Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, but his choice of medium tyres proved key as they allowed him to stay close to the super-soft electing Ferraris.
He jumped past them during the pit period, and strolled to victory although he later admitted it was a gamble.
“Definitely we used the red flag perfectly to go to medium,” he said.
"The challenge is you don't know what the others are putting on, and Ferrari didn't know what I was putting on.
"I could've been putting on super-softs and just trying to attack to overtake them, so they needed to defend that on super-softs.
"It was a bit of a gamble, a poker game, and we came out on top."
The next race is in Bahrain in two weeks.
