Fernando Alonso has said that he would rather have “no respect and to win more trophies” rather than be admired for his superb record in poorer cars.
The double world champion has been at Ferrari for five years but he has only been in contention for the championship twice. The failure of Formula One’s most famous team to produce a car capable of matching Red Bull and satisfy the amazing talent of Alonso has been one of the more frustrating features of the sport for the past five seasons.
Alonso has been lauded as the best driver in the sport after countless displays of brilliance. He has regularly dragged the Ferrari to podium finishes and strong points positions. However, he hasn't managed to conjure a third world title, and has seen rival Sebastian Vettel collect four.
Rumours are rife that Alonso might leave Ferrari soon for one more shot a third title. But he still insists he is committed to the Italian team. However, his frustrations with this year’s car are obvious.
"It's been five years like this. There is always satisfaction that everyone believes you are always performing at your best. There's the respect from drivers, Team Principals and fans for the job that you do. But I prefer to have no respect and to win more trophies."
It is difficult to foresee Alonso becoming a regular winner this season. And with the new rule change seeing Ferrari a long way back from rivals Mercedes and Red Bull, it may be hard to bridge that gap for 2015.
