(Photo by Mark Sutton / LAT Images) **Marbles are the small balls of shed tyre rubber that accumulate off the racing line during a Formula 1 race.** They form as tyre wear peels rubber from the surface, and gather in the corners where cars do not run. Anyone who leaves the racing line, whether to overtake or defend, drives through them. The result is an instant loss of grip that has decided more than one Grand Prix. ## What are marbles in F1? Marbles are the pea-sized pellets of rubber that peel off F1 tyres as they wear and get flicked to the sides of the track. They collect in a wide band just outside the racing line, especially at the exits of fast corners and along the outside of the racing groove. A car that drops a wheel onto them is effectively driving on ball bearings, because the marbles roll rather than grip. ## Why marbles form - constant tyre wear across a race distance sheds rubber; - the racing line clears itself as cars drive over any pellets that land on it; - the outside of the corner, where cars rarely go, accumulates them; - hot circuits and abrasive surfaces produce far more marbles than cool, smooth tracks; - the softer the compound in use, the more marbles per lap. ## How marbles affect the racing Marbles enforce the racing line. A driver who tries to overtake off-line risks running through them and losing time to the driver who stayed on the clean strip. That makes defending easier in the later laps of a race, and it is one of the reasons overtakes tend to happen into the braking zones and not through the corners themselves. After the race, drivers deliberately weave through the marbles on the in-lap to pick them up, because the extra rubber temporarily makes the car look heavier at the FIA weighbridge. ## Managing marbles Circuits sometimes send out sweepers between sessions to clear marbles from off-line areas, especially at street circuits. Pirelli and the FIA also review the compound choice at circuits where marbles have historically been severe. On tracks like Bahrain, Barcelona and Sepang the marbles field is legendary, and teams factor it into strategy calls. ## Frequently asked questions about marbles ### What are marbles in F1? Every kilo of rubber they add is a kilo less risk of being underweight. ### Do all circuits have the same marbles problem? No. Hot, abrasive circuits like Bahrain and Barcelona shed far more marbles than cool, smooth ones like Silverstone. Compound choice also plays a role. ### Can circuits be cleaned of marbles during a race? Not during a race, but sometimes between sessions, especially at street circuits, marshals sweep the run-off areas.
