(Photo by Sam Bagnall/Sutton Images) **The Macarena wing is the paddock nickname given to a radical rotating rear-wing concept that [Ferrari](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-teams/ferrari-f1-information-statistics/) debuted at pre-season testing in Bahrain for the 2026 Formula 1 season.** The wing does not just tilt like a conventional DRS-style device, it flips completely upside-down between corner and straight modes, and it earned its nickname from team principal Frederic Vasseur's comparison of its rotating motion to the mid-1990s Macarena dance. ## What is the Macarena wing in F1? The Macarena wing is a rear-wing flap that, instead of merely opening a gap for airflow like the old DRS flap, rotates through 180 degrees so that its aerodynamic profile is turned upside down when the car is in low-drag mode. In conventional downforce (Z-mode) the wing works as a standard inverted aerofoil. In low-drag (X-mode) the flap flips over so its previously smaller upper surface becomes the lower one, opening a much wider gap for air to pass through and dramatically reducing drag. ## Where the nickname came from Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur nicknamed the device the "Macarena" wing for the way it dances between positions, a joking reference to the ubiquitous 1990s dance track by Los del Rio. The nickname stuck immediately in the paddock and the FIA's own explanation of the device now refers to it under that name. [Red Bull](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-teams/red-bull-racing/) developed a very similar rotating-wing concept for testing at the same event, and the paddock had a running joke that the two teams should have coordinated their song choice. ## Why it exists: the 2026 active-aero rules The 2026 technical regulations introduced fully active aerodynamics, replacing DRS with driver-selectable X-mode (low-drag) and Z-mode (high-downforce) configurations. The Macarena wing is Ferrari's aggressive interpretation of the X-mode rules: rotating the flap fully upside down maximises the pressure differential between downforce and low-drag configurations without exceeding the geometric envelope the FIA defined. Support pylons on the wing have been shifted to reduce flexing at high speed while still allowing the rotation motion. ## Ferrari, Red Bull and the wider adoption Ferrari brought the Macarena wing to Bahrain testing and Australia, but removed it after the first practice session of the 2026 [Chinese grand prix](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-calendar/chinese-grand-prix-f1-race-information/), citing difficulties with reliable operation at the specific speeds Shanghai demanded.
