# Brake Balance
Brake balance decides how the car behaves the moment the driver hits the pedal at over 300 km/h.
## What is brake balance in Formula 1?
Brake balance, also called *brake bias*, is the ratio of braking force between the front and rear axles. In F1 it is expressed as a front-axle percentage, typically in the range of about 55 to 60 per cent front. A driver dialing in "58 per cent front" means the front wheels do 58 per cent of the braking work and the rears do the remaining 42 per cent.
## How the driver adjusts brake balance
A rotary switch on the steering wheel lets the driver shift bias forward or rearward in small increments during a lap. Moving bias forward stabilises the car under heavy braking but risks locking the front tyres. Moving bias rearward gives the driver more rotation into the corner but increases the risk of the rear stepping out. Most drivers make several bias changes per lap, especially in braking-heavy sequences like [Monaco](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-calendar/monaco-grand-prix/) Sainte-Devote and Baku Turn 1.
## Brake-by-wire and the modern hybrid era
Since 2014 F1 cars have used a **brake-by-wire** system on the rear axle. The MGU-K harvests braking energy at the rear wheels, which changes how much friction braking the discs need to apply. The car's electronics blend friction and regenerative braking so the total rear force matches the driver's bias setting. Without brake-by-wire the driver would feel the rear brake force change every time the MGU-K harvest state changed, which would make the car undriveable.
## Why brake balance changes during a race
Several factors force the driver to adjust bias through the race:
- fuel burns off, the car gets lighter and rear grip changes;
- tyres wear, and the front-to-rear grip balance shifts;
- brake disc temperatures rise, changing the friction coefficient;
- ambient and track temperatures change over the afternoon;
- the driver may want more or less rotation in specific corners.
