# Wind tunnel correlation
Inside the Wind tunnel at McLaren Technology Centre
**Wind tunnel correlation is the discipline of making sure Formula 1 aerodynamic data measured in a scaled model wind tunnel actually matches what the full-size car does on track.** If the numbers do not correlate, every design decision made in the tunnel becomes suspect, and correcting a lost correlation loop is the single most expensive engineering exercise in modern F1.
## What is wind tunnel correlation in F1?
Wind tunnel correlation is the ongoing process of comparing measurements from a scaled aerodynamic model (typically 60 per cent scale) with data from the real car on track. Downforce, drag, balance shifts under ride-height changes and yaw response should all match between the two. When they do, the tunnel is a trustworthy design environment. When they do not, every subsequent development decision is at risk.
## Why correlation is hard
- tunnel Reynolds numbers are different from track Reynolds numbers;
- the moving belt under the car simulates road motion imperfectly;
- tyres flex differently at scale, changing floor-edge behaviour;
- chassis and suspension flex on track cannot be perfectly replicated;
- CFD and tunnel data must also correlate with each other before being trusted.
## What happens when correlation is lost
The most famous modern example is the [Mercedes](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-teams/mercedes/) W13 of 2022. Its wind-tunnel data suggested the zero-sidepod car would work; the on-track performance did not agree. Chasing the correlation loop back into place cost Mercedes most of that season. Ferrari faced its own correlation problems with the SF-23 in 2023. When correlation breaks, engineers cannot trust that a modification tested at the factory will produce the expected on-track gain.
## Fixing correlation
Correlation work typically involves recalibrating the tunnel model, verifying moving-belt behaviour, and running specific correlation tests with the real car to check that a known set-up matches the tunnel prediction. If the tunnel itself is at fault, teams sometimes have to rebuild sections of the belt, the model mounting or the flow-conditioning hardware. It is expensive, slow, and can only be done between race weekends because on-track time is limited by the aerodynamic testing restrictions.
