When drivers change teams, when engineers move factories, and when suppliers negotiate contracts, IP is at the centre of every conversation. ## What is intellectual property in Formula 1? Intellectual property, in the F1 context, is the collection of rights that teams, manufacturers, drivers and Formula 1 itself hold over the creative and technical output of the sport. It covers CAD drawings, aerodynamic geometries, control software, team liveries, driver marketing rights, race titles, calendar rights, and the F1 wordmark and logo. All of these are protected by copyright, trademark, patent or contract, and their transfer or licensing is the subject of intense negotiation. ## Common F1 IP disputes - **Team departures:** engineers moving between teams often trigger disputes over what design knowledge they can carry; - **Copycat cars:** the 2020 Racing Point RP20 was fined and docked points for using Mercedes brake ducts derived from photographs, in an IP-and-listed-parts case; - **Driver imagery:** teams and manufacturers negotiate careful splits of a driver's marketing rights; - **Supplier contracts:** engine, gearbox and other supply deals define who owns improvements developed during the relationship; - **Merchandise and broadcast:** FOM licenses the F1 wordmark and controls its use across the paddock. ## Listed and open parts The FIA Technical Regulations define a taxonomy of **Listed Team Components**, parts a team must design themselves, **Standard Components** supplied to every team, and **Transferable Components** that can be bought from another team. IP flows through this taxonomy: for Listed parts, teams may not use another team's IP; for Transferable parts, they must license it; for Standard parts, the FIA controls the design. ## Frequently asked questions about F1 intellectual property ### What does IP mean in F1? IP stands for intellectual property, the legally protected rights over technical designs, software, trademarks, imagery and contracts that teams and drivers use to define what they own. ### Why does IP matter when an engineer changes teams? Because they may carry design knowledge that legally belongs to their old employer. Teams sometimes place engineers on "gardening leave" for months to prevent them arriving at a rival with fresh knowledge of a current design. ### What is a Listed Team Component? A Listed Team Component is a part of an F1 car that the team must design in-house. It cannot be bought or licensed from another team. ### What was the Racing Point brake-duct case? In 2020 Racing Point was found to have copied Mercedes brake duct designs from photographs. Because brake ducts are a Listed Team Component, the team was fined and docked constructors' points. ### Who owns the Formula 1 name? Formula One Management owns the Formula 1 wordmark and the F1 logo, and licenses their use to teams, promoters and merchandise partners.
