[1](#comments) Formula 1 returns to the Ring this weekend with [Pirelli](https://www.pirelli.com/) once again leaning into the soft end of its range, setting up the [Austrian grand prix](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-calendar/austrian-grand-prix-f1-race-information/) as a strategic test rather than a simple flat-out dash through the Styrian hills. ### Pirelli Keeps Austria On The Soft Side Pirelli has selected the C3, C4 and C5 compounds for Spielberg, meaning the Hard, Medium and Soft labels will again be attached to the three softest tyres in the current range. That is no surprise for Austria. Since 2022, the Austrian Grand Prix has consistently been run with this C3-C4-C5 selection, while the second Spielberg race in 2021 also used the same softest trio after the Styrian Grand Prix had run one step harder with C2-C3-C4. The logic is clear enough. The [Red Bull Ring](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-circuits/red-bull-ring/) is short, sharp and not especially brutal on lateral tyre load, despite its old and abrasive surface. Wear is not the main enemy here. Heat is. ### Spielberg Is Short, But Never Simple At 4.326 kilometres and with just ten corners, Spielberg can look deceptively easy on paper. It is anything but. The lap is a compact burst of heavy braking, steep elevation change and [traction](https://www.f1-fansite.com/glossary/traction/) zones, with drivers repeatedly asking the rear tyres to dig the car out of slow corners. The front axle will also need watching. Several braking zones arrive downhill, which increases the risk of lock-ups, particularly when drivers are pushing on low fuel or fighting in traffic. Altitude adds another useful complication. The Red Bull Ring sits around 660 metres above sea level, where thinner air means less [downforce](https://www.f1-fansite.com/glossary/downforce/). Less downforce means more sliding, and more sliding usually means more tyre temperature. In Austria, that can be enough to turn a clean race into a strategic headache. ### One Stop Or Two? Last year’s race was largely shaped by two-stop strategies, with the Soft and Medium the main starting tyres. Five drivers began on the C5, while the rest of the grid chose the C4. The podium finishers ran the Hard compound in the middle stint before switching back to Mediums for the run to the flag. This year, Pirelli expects the greater consistency of the current tyres to push teams closer towards a one-stop race. That does not mean the two-stop is dead. At Spielberg, safety cars, traffic, [graining](https://www.f1-fansite.com/glossary/graining/), overheating and track position can all [drag](https://www.f1-fansite.com/glossary/drag/) teams away from the neat strategy simulations prepared on Saturday night. And because the lap is so short, qualifying traffic and race gaps can get messy very quickly. Austria has a habit of making small problems look rather large. ### A Familiar Soft-Tyre Pattern The compound history also tells the story of how Pirelli views Spielberg. In 2019 and 2020, the race used C2, C3 and C4. For the 2021 double-header, Pirelli split the nominations: C2-C3-C4 for the Styrian Grand Prix, then C3-C4-C5 for the Austrian Grand Prix one week later. Since then, the softest available trio has effectively become Austria’s standard allocation. That reflects the circuit’s low lateral severity and its ability to generate strategy through thermal [degradation](https://www.f1-fansite.com/glossary/degradation/) rather than pure tyre wear. In simpler terms: the tyres usually have enough life, but keeping them in the right temperature window is where the race can be won or lost. ### Verstappen’s Home Fortress Awaits This will be the 39th running of the Austrian Grand Prix. The event first appeared at Zeltweg in 1964, moved to the Österreichring in 1970, returned later as the A1-Ring, and now lives in its modern Red Bull Ring form. [Max Verstappen](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-drivers/max-verstappen-information-statistics/) remains the most successful driver in Austrian Grand Prix history with four victories, one more than [Alain Prost](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-drivers/alain-prost/). [McLaren](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-teams/mclaren/) lead the constructors’ roll of honour with seven Austrian GP wins, ahead of and [Mercedes](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-teams/mercedes/) on six each. For Red Bull, this is the home race. For everyone else, it is a chance to spoil the party on a circuit where margins are tiny, tyres can quickly overheat outside the right temperature window, and a supposedly simple lap usually finds a way to bite. Nothing new because Pirelli has brought the C3-C5 combination to Red Bull Ring for some time. Lapping around the Red Bull Ring ultimately takes less time than on any other current circuit; hence, gaps are typically small in qualifying, although they can vanish just as comically on any other short circuit, & it has 7 actual corners, given FIA’s inconsistent & excessive way of numbering corners. Red Bull Ring is also yet another circuit where lots of lapping is to be expected if the race is entirely neutralization-free. Red Bull Ring’s altitude is similar to Interlagos, so the effect isn’t anywhere near the same as in Mexico City, & ambient temperatures can indeed reach the low-30s.
