## The Alfetta: A Pre-War Car Conquering the World
The [Alfa Romeo](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-teams/alfa-romeo-f1-information-statistics/) 159, popularly known as the Alfetta, represents one of the most extraordinary achievements in motorsport history. Developed from the original Alfa Romeo 158 of 1938, the 159 was essentially a refined pre-war design that continued to dominate post-war Grand Prix racing with a combination of superb engineering, exceptional driver talent, and a supercharged straight-eight engine that, by 1951, was producing around 425 horsepower. The fact that a car conceived in the late 1930s remained competitive enough to win the 1951 Formula 1 World Championship, the second year of the official [FIA](https://www.fia.com/) championship, speaks to both the brilliance of its original design and the continuous development it received throughout more than a decade of competition.
## Fangio and the 1951 Championship
The 1951 Formula 1 World Championship saw the Alfa Romeo 159 in its finest form, with [Juan Manuel Fangio](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-drivers/juan-manuel-fangio/) driving one of the most celebrated cars of the early championship era to his first World title. Fangio's combination of technical sensitivity, his ability to preserve tyres and machinery while maintaining competitive pace, and raw speed made him the ideal partner for a car that demanded skill to manage its power and weight. The Argentine's three victories and overall consistency across the season produced a championship margin that, despite fierce competition from [Ferrari](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-teams/ferrari-f1-information-statistics/) and the emerging talents of Froilán González, was ultimately comfortable. It was the beginning of Fangio's legendary championship record, which would reach five titles before the decade was out.
## The First World Champion and Alfa's Farewell
The 1950 World Championship had already been claimed using the Alfa Romeo 158/159 by Giuseppe "Nino" Farina, the very first FIA Formula 1 World Champion in history. Farina's victory at [Silverstone](https://www.f1-fansite.com/f1-circuits/silverstone-circuit/) in that inaugural 1950 race produced an image that has become synonymous with the birth of the World Championship: the long-bonneted Alfettas sweeping through the Northamptonshire countryside in formation. With two World Championships secured in the formula's opening two seasons, Alfa Romeo withdrew from Formula 1 at the end of 1951, citing the cost of development against the rising challenge from Ferrari's naturally aspirated engines. Their exit left the 159 as an undefeated champion, a record that remains unique in the sport's history.
