Like many on the grid, 2013 will prove to be the crunch year in Nico Rosberg’s career. Does he possess the ability to become a world champion, one of the elite drivers in the sport or is he just a very good driver without being spectacular. That is the question.
Since moving to Mercedes Nico Rosberg has comfortably beaten his team mate Michael Schumacher, which is impressive. But with the seven time champion now being 43 Rosberg’s achievements are put into perspective. However in under-achieving Mercedes Rosberg has been consistently in the top 7 and took his maiden win in China after a faultless performance. Surely he would have been in with a shout at the title had Mercedes been able to keep their car competitive this season after a promising start.
Next season he is joined by Lewis Hamilton and will share the burden of trying to make Mercedes one of the fastest teams on the grid and fighting for race wins and world championships. If he pushes Hamilton close then he will be vindicated. If not, then his chances of retaining his drive are perhaps slim. No pressure.
However pressure is something Nico Rosberg has coped with all his life. The son of the 1982 world champion Keke Rosberg can’t enter the sport where his father ruled and not be under pressure or compared to the great Keke. 2013 will be his 8th season in formula one and it is remarkable to think he is just 27.
Williams took a gamble when they signed him in 2006 but he answered his critics almost immediately by setting the fastest lap of the race in an uncompetitive car on his debut around Bahrain. He scored a poor total of 4 points this F1 season. That wasn’t the greatest start to his F1 career.
A stronger 2007 season saw him finish with 20 points with a highest finish of 4th and beat team mate Alexander Wurz, and a great start to the 2008 season saw him take his first podium, 3rd in Australia.
2008 was another poor season for Williams but Nico Rosberg fought well and scored a second place in the very difficult Singapore F1 Grand Prix.
2009 was Nico Rosberg’s breakthrough year as he scored each of the teams 34.5 points and finishing 6th in the championship.
2010 saw Rosberg move to Mercedes where four podiums in 3 years isn’t a fair reflection on his talent. An understated driver, who compares well to Jenson Button, Rosberg should excel in the company of Hamilton next year and prove that the Englishman isn’t the only one who can save Mercedes-Benz and win the F1 drivers championship..
